Eating Local with Market Wagon

I don’t think there is anything better than eating foods that come directly from Local Farms. The first time I tried Market Wagon was a year and a half ago and I still highly recommend it.

The food that I purchase on Market Wagon’s website are sourced from Kentucky or Indiana. It just makes me feel good to support the Local Farms. And it’s such an easy process to order your food online and have it sent directly to your front door.

Market Wagon has such a great selection of meats from Local Farms. In my latest order, I received Skirt Steak, Flat Iron Steak, Sirloin Steak, Bacon and Sausage Patties.

One of my favorite meats to cook for dinner is the Skirt Steak. Are you familiar with this cut of meat? Do you know how to cook it?

Skirt Steak is a thin, long cut which comes from the short plate or diaphragm area of the steer (just under the rib section). I like to keep my seasoning simple with just salt and pepper. When grilling or griddling, make sure you dry the surface of the Steak for a good sear. Excess moisture will create a steam and prevent you from creating a nice crust on the Steak. You will want to cook it fast with high heat; just three minutes on each side and you are done. I pair mine with heirloom cherry tomatoes, jalapeรฑos and cilantro. It’s so good!

Best Way to Slice Skirt Steak — Slice across the grain, about 1/4 inch thick. Make sure you hold your knife at a 45-degree angle to create a bias cut.

Summer Crisp Leaf Lettuce, Smoked Bacon, Goat Cheese and Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

The best thing about Market Wagon is the plethora of options to choose from. To help you out if you are trying to decide on what you should try for your first Market Wagon order, here are my usuals:

River City Aquaponics, Shelbyville, Kentucky — If there is one thing to try in your next order, it’s the Summer Crisp Leaf Lettuce. Holy Moly, it’s my new favorite. I use these in our BLT lettuce wraps. I love the texture and how easy it folds for the perfect lettuce wrap. Summer Crisp Leaf Lettuce is sweet and juicy, no bitterness.

Bear Creek Cattle (Palmyra, Indiana) — Their meats are so delicious that my family just cannot get enough. We love their flat iron steaks, skirt steaks and sirloin steaks. Their beef is raised without hormones and antibiotics. I can feel good about what I am cooking for my family.

Old Major Market (Indianapolis, Indiana) — They have the best smoked bacon. We love it in our BLT lettuce wraps.

Boone Creek Creamery (Lexington, Kentucky) — My go-to for the best cheeses. I like to order their pimento cheese and smoked cheddar cheese.

Sadona Farms (Scottsburg, Indiana) — Candied Pecans!!!! I mean is there anything else better? They are the perfect snack or you can add them to your favorite salad. Tip for you, make sure you order a few bags because the first bunch will be eaten within minutes of arriving to your door. You will not be able to eat just one. You will eat the whole bag.

4 Birds Bakery (Indianapolis, Indiana) — I am a huge fan of their Spent Grain Crackers. I pair it with Boone Creek Creamery’s pimento cheese. Such a good combo of flavors.
