Something Worse Than Washing Your Hair Every Day?.. Chemicals in Dry Shampoo

Washing your hair every day can strip away oil which can leave your hair dry and prone to breakage. Dry shampoo has become a staple in many homes because of it. Little did we know, the dry shampoo we were using may contain some level of benzene.

Benzene is a chemical that can be used in the manufacturing process. It’s linked to cancer and is something I thought deserved more than just a story on my Instagram account.

A lot of women I know use dry shampoo. The haircare line, Batiste just recently agreed to pay $2.5 million settlement over dry shampoo. The claim states that Batiste’s dry shampoo may contain a potentially harmful level of the carcinogen benzene.

Benzene may be associated with the propellants and other components of aerosol sprays. Therefore, deodorant sprays, sunscreen sprays and foot sprays may also contain benzene.

For dry shampoo, most folks I know use the aerosol option, although there are non-aerosol options out there on the market. I plan to explore these over the next month or so and will blog about it. Stay tuned.

Make sure you are checking the label of your aerosol products to see if they contain benzene or “propellant”. If they do, you may want to discontinue use.
